Man Arrested After Deadly A34 Crash Kills Reading Driver

Police have arrested a man following a fatal smash on the A34 yesterday morning. The horror collision happened at 9.19am on July 3, southbound at Bullington Cross.

Three Vehicles Involved in Morning Tragedy

The crash involved a HGV lorry, a Peugeot van, and a Toyota Auris. Tragically, the Toyota’s driver – a 43-year-old man from Reading – was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s family has been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.

Passengers Suffer Serious Injuries

  • The van’s driver, a 49-year-old also from Reading, was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He is now critical but stable.
  • A 46-year-old woman in the front passenger seat of the lorry, hailing from Huddersfield, was seriously hurt and also taken to Southampton.
  • The lorry driver, 40, from Huddersfield, escaped with minor injuries.

Road Closure and Ongoing Investigation

The southbound carriageway was shut until 12.30am on July 4 while crash barriers were repaired after being badly damaged.

Driver Arrested on Multiple Charges

The lorry driver, a 40-year-old man from Reading, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving without due care, and driving while unfit due to drugs and alcohol.

He has since been released from custody but remains under investigation.
