Speeding Driver Jailed for Tragic Head-On Crash That Killed Retired Pilot
Fatal Smash on Wiltshire Roads
A reckless driver has been locked up for eight and a half years after a deadly head-on collision in Dilton Marsh, Wiltshire. Louis Tavener, 23, from Westbury, admitted dangerous driving that cost 63-year-old Warwick Bayman his life and left three others seriously injured.
The crash happened on April 11, 2023, on the A3098 near Chalcot Park Farm. Tavener was racing a BMW at up to 78mph—nearly 30mph over the wet road’s 50mph limit—when he lost control and smashed head-on into Mr Bayman’s car coming the other way.
Victim’s Family Pays Heartfelt Tribute
Warwick Bayman, a retired commercial pilot and rally driver from Frome, died at the scene. He was just weeks from marrying his fiancée. His family described him as “one of the truly good guys” and shared their heartbreak.
“The way in which my brother lost his life was slightly ironic. He was a commercial pilot, an HGV Class 1 driver, and a superbly skilled rally driver who had nothing to prove on the road. Police Slam Driver’s Recklessness
Sergeant Rich Hatch of Wiltshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team condemned Tavener’s dangerous behaviour:
“Tavener’s reckless driving not only took the life of a respected man, but it also left a lasting impact on those injured and their families.”
“Mr. Bayman was just weeks away from marrying his partner when Tavener’s dangerous actions stole their future together.”
“We urge all drivers to recognise the risks of speeding, especially in poor weather conditions. This tragedy could have been avoided.”
Stiff Sentence and Driving Ban
On November 18, 2024, Salisbury Crown Court sentenced Tavener to eight-and-a-half years behind bars. He must serve at least two-thirds of his prison term.
Additionally, Tavener received a 10-year driving ban and will have to pass an extended driving test before getting his licence back. The lengthy investigation by Wiltshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service highlighted the devastating impact on the victims and their families.
