12-Year-Old Football Whizz Kid Wins Big for Leadership
Zeko Smith, just 12, is no ordinary football fan. He spends hours every week training, coaching younger players, boosting teammates’ mental wellbeing, and supporting fellow coaches.
From Pitch Leader to Award Winner
Thanks to his dedication and big-hearted attitude, Zeko scooped this year’s Young Leader of the Year Award. Nominated by his coach, he’s been recognised by Nottinghamshire Police’s Live Our Best Life Awards, which spotlight outstanding young talent across the county.
Captain of Hucknall Warriors for seven years, Zeko has become a key figure on and off the pitch.
“I love football because it’s fun, an amazing sport, and you get to meet loads of new people,” said Zeko. “Before every game, I send a motivational message on WhatsApp to my team saying, ‘Come on lads, we need a win to push us up in the league.’ The boys really appreciate it.”
He also shares the spotlight, stepping off the pitch to give others game time. And when mates are down after tough matches, Zeko’s there with words of encouragement. “Next time you’ll prove who you are,” he tells them.
Future Plan: Footballer or Police Officer
Zeko dreams of turning pro but has a backup plan in the police force. “I know officers who love their job. They’re always intrigued by what’s happening and want to investigate,” he says.
Meanwhile, he’s also coaching under-9s, helping the youngest players fall in love with football.
Coach Hails ‘Inspirational’ Young Leader
Coach Steve Freestone praised Zeko’s impact: “He’s the most inspirational young player I’ve met in seven years. From a young age, he took on captaincy effortlessly and his positivity is infectious.”
Steve added: “Zeko sends weekly WhatsApp updates preparing the team for matches. His enthusiasm and attitude lift everyone. He even helps coach the under-8s, engaging kids half his age with ease. The club is incredibly lucky to have him.”
Youth worker Romel Davis said, “Zeko’s dedication, leadership, and caring nature make him a true role model. Seeing his reaction to this award surrounded by family and friends was heartwarming.”
