Bishop Auckland UKRO Event Pulls in the Crowds
Emergency crews stole the show at Bishop Auckland Community Fire Station’s open day on May 14. Hundreds flocked to see the UK Regional Rescue Operation (UKRO) and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue in action.
Rescue Demos From Quad Bikes to Horses
The event was a blaze of excitement with something for everyone. Visitors enjoyed quad bikes, blood bikes, sniffer dogs, horses, and even special appearances by TV police inspectors. A vintage fire engine was also on display, adding a nostalgic touch.
Lincolnshire Fire Team Steals the Spotlight
The competition featured fire crews from across County Durham, plus guests from Ayr’s Scottish Fire and Rescue Challenge winners. But it was the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service Extrication team who took the crown – winning for the second year running with the top weekend performance.
Community Champions and Star Guests
The event wasn’t just about thrills. Several charities were on hand to raise awareness and offer advice. The county’s Police Interceptor team arrived with their star officers and cars, drawing big interest from the crowd.
Town Mayor Praises Success
Bishop Auckland Mayor Lee Brownson praised the turnout: “It’s a fantastic event with twice as many people as last year. Seeing families and kids learning about our emergency services helps bridge the gap and build community spirit.”
Fire Chief Stuart Errington added, “It’s been an excellent event. We were overwhelmed by the number of visitors and the range of attractions on offer.”
The event was organised by County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue’s district manager Adam Hall and assistant district manager Paul Cummings, securing Bishop Auckland as a hotspot for emergency service action.
