HS2 Boss Sounds Warning Over Future UK Government Projects

The head of construction giant Mace Group has thrown cold water on plans to dive into more government projects amid growing doubts over the future of the HS2 rail line. Rising costs have sparked rumours the crucial Birmingham to Manchester section could be scrapped.

HS2’s Future in the Balance

Mark Reynolds, CEO of Mace Group, said it’s “very rare” for major projects to be halted but admitted the UK construction scene is “challenging” right now. The government is currently reassessing ways to control HS2’s spiralling expenses.

HS2 is designed to stitch together London, the Midlands, and northern England, with phase one linking west London to Birmingham already underway. But delays, ballooning costs, and previous cuts — including the axe on the eastern leg from Birmingham to Leeds — have put the entire scheme under scrutiny.

There are growing fears the new rail route might stop at Old Oak Common in west London instead of the heart of the capital at Euston station, further dimming HS2’s prospects.

US Government Takes a Swing at eBay Over Dangerous Products

The US government has filed a lawsuit against eBay, accusing the online giant of selling harmful products that break federal environmental laws. The complaint, lodged in a Brooklyn court, targets items designed to bypass emissions controls, hazardous paint removers containing methylene chloride, and mislabelled pesticides.

The Department of Justice warns some products cause serious vehicle pollution while others pose “potentially lethal dangers” to users. The lawsuit claims eBay has the means to stop these illegal sales but chooses not to, profiting from dangerous transactions.
