Burglar Busted by Students in Nottingham Hall Raid

Mudasser Ahmed, 43, got more than he bargained for when he tried to raid a student hall of residence in Nottingham city centre. The brazen burglar was caught red-handed at Russel Street after a quick-thinking group of students stopped him in his tracks.

Students Foil Burglary, Snatch Rucksack with Evidence

One student grabbed Ahmed’s rucksack during the scuffle, uncovering his identity through documents, including his photo and personal details. Inside the bag were two laptops, a charger, aftershave – all stolen from the students.

Ahmed, who has no fixed address, pushed past students and got into a heated confrontation, even losing a false tooth in the tussle. However, he fled once his loot and identity were exposed.

Career Criminal Jailed for Nearly Four Years

Ahmed appeared at Nottingham Crown Court and was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for burglary on 7 December 2022.

“Committing another burglary while still carrying prison release papers reveals the sort of prolific, career criminal we’re up against,” said Detective Sergeant Franco Guddemi.

“This sentence sends a strong message: burglary won’t be tolerated. We take every report seriously because behind each crime is a victim and family left shaken.”

Police Warn Students to Secure Their Homes

Detective Sergeant Guddemi warned that student accommodation is often targeted due to insecure doors and multiple occupants – a tempting prospect for burglars.

  • Check door and window locks regularly
  • Always lock doors and windows, especially on ground floors
  • Students in shared houses should collectively ensure security is tight

“Working together is key to keeping homes safe,” he added.
