Government Launches Hardcore Crackdown on Youth Vaping
The UK government is set to roll out tough new measures to slam illegal vape sales to under-18s and tackle rising youth vaping.
£3 Million Enforcement Squad to Target Illicit Vapes
- A dedicated ‘illicit vapes enforcement squad’ will be formed, backed by £3 million in government cash.
- Trading Standards will lead the crackdown with regional networks and local authorities working together nationwide.
- The squad will tackle illegal vape sales in shops and at borders, remove banned products, and guide businesses on compliance.
Health Minister Neil O’Brien is expected to unveil the squad during a speech at Policy Exchange on 11 April, highlighting the government’s firm stance against underage vaping.
Call for Evidence to Stop Kids Vaping
The government will also launch a “Call for Evidence” to sniff out new ways to keep vapes away from children, while keeping devices accessible to adults trying to quit smoking.
This initiative will dive deep into key issues like vape marketing tactics and the environmental impact of disposable vapes.
Minister’s Warning: Protect Kids from Nicotine Hook
“Smoking kills, so our priority is to prevent people smoking, and support them to quit. We remain committed to our ambition to be smokefree by 2030,” said Neil O’Brien.
“While vaping is better than smoking for adults, the rise of youth vaping – especially disposable vapes – is worrying. Our new squad will clamp down on illegal sales to children and get them off nicotine before it’s too late.”
“The Call for Evidence will help us understand exactly how to reduce underage access and use.”
Smoking Rates Drop, But Vigilance Remains
Smoking rates in England hit a record low of 13% in 2021, thanks to stepped-up taxes and local stop smoking services.
- Nearly 100,000 people quit in 2021-22 with NHS support, funded by £68 million from public health grants.
- Another £35 million was pledged last year for NHS tobacco treatment services for patients admitted to hospitals.
The new vaping enforcement squad and evidence review show the government is stepping up to guard the next generation from nicotine addiction. Watch this space for updates.
