Chaos at HMP Long Lartin as 80 inmates launch brutal pool ball attack on staff

Prison officers have been injured after a shocking rampage at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire. Around 80 prisoners went on the attack using pool balls, forcing staff to retreat from the prison’s E wing amid violent unrest.

‘Tornado teams’ rush in to regain control

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) confirmed they have deployed ten specialist “tornado teams” of riot officers to tackle the escalating incident. A MoJ spokesperson said: “We are currently managing an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin. We are absolutely clear offenders who behave like this will be punished and face extra time behind bars.”

Disturbance at top-security jail sparks alarm

Long Lartin is one of England’s highest-security prisons, holding mainly life-sentenced and Category A inmates. Violence in such facilities is rare thanks to higher staff numbers and older prisoner demographics. Yet recent staff cuts, with a fifth of posts vacant, may have contributed to the trouble.

Staff on E wing pulled back and secured the area to prevent the violence from spreading elsewhere. Meanwhile, a separate protest is believed to be ongoing in another part of the prison.

Prison on the brink amid staffing crisis

Once a fortress of control, Long Lartin now faces serious strain. The jail’s capacity is 622 inmates, many awaiting trial or serving life sentences. But with recruitment struggling to keep pace with cuts, insiders warn it’s a prison on the edge.
