Granny Targeted by Rogue Traders in Shocking Driveway Scam
An 81-year-old woman was hassled by three men who jet washed her driveway without permission before demanding £300 in payment. The brazen cowboys struck near Station Road, Edenbridge, on Saturday 11 March 2023.
Suspects Flee as Relative Steps In
Luckily, the scammers fled when a family member confronted them at the scene. No cash changed hands. The trio were driving a white Ford Transit van with Irish plates.
More Doorstep Dodginess Reported in Sevenoaks
Just two days later, Kent Police received reports of two men persistently knocking on doors around Broomfield Road, Sevenoaks. They offered to clean driveways using a silver Toyota Hilux. Police believe both incidents are connected.
Inspector Matt Atkinson of Sevenoaks Local Policing Team said: “Some criminals exploit vulnerable people by charging sky-high prices for work that’s unnecessary or shoddy. We urge residents not to deal with cold callers offering driveway cleaning, roof repairs, or garden maintenance. Neighbours, keep an eye on the elderly. If you see anything suspicious, call the police immediately.”
Top Tips to Avoid Rogue Traders
- Refuse doorstep offers for repairs or maintenance immediately.
- Don’t be bullied into agreeing to any work. If they refuse to leave, ring 999.
- Never go to a bank or cashpoint with a trader — genuine tradespeople won’t ask.
- Use only trusted traders registered with the Kent County Council Trading Standards Approved Trader Scheme (kent.gov.uk).
- Always get quotes in writing and verify the trader’s credentials and company.
