New High-Tech Gritters Ready to Tackle Winter Roads

Ninety-three cutting-edge gritters are set to hit England’s motorways and major A roads this winter. This multi-million-pound investment aims to keep traffic flowing smoothly, no matter how harsh the weather gets.

Faster, Safer, Smarter Gritting

The latest gritters pack improved technology and enhanced visibility, making roads safer for drivers and workers alike. They can treat roads at up to 50mph—10mph faster than older models—clearing the way quicker than ever.

Jane Wilkins, Highways England’s winter fleet manager, said:

“These vehicles come with innovative tech that lets us pre-program salting routes. The gritters automatically adjust salt spread for bridges, landscapes, and other road features, so drivers can concentrate on the road.

“When wintry weather strikes, our 1,300 specially trained gritter drivers will be working around the clock to keep traffic moving.”

The Full Winter Arsenal

Highways England boasts a fleet of 535 gritters, all serviced over summer, supported by 127 depots nationwide. They have 23 snow blowers capable of shifting up to 2,500 tonnes of snow per hour, plus over 280,000 tonnes of salt in store.

To keep an eye on conditions, around 250 weather stations monitor England’s 4,400 miles of major roads. Overhead warning signs alert drivers to severe weather hazards.

Top Tips for Drivers in Severe Weather

  • Snow & Ice: Stick to main roads and only travel if necessary. Always carry a snow kit — ice scraper, de-icer, warm clothes, blankets, and sunglasses for low sun glare.
  • High Winds: Slow down, especially if driving lorries, caravans or motorbikes. Avoid exposed road sections where possible.
  • Heavy Rain: Keep extra distance, ease off the accelerator if steering goes light, and slow down if visibility drops.
  • Fog: Use fog lights, never full beam. If visibility is too poor, find a safe place to stop until it clears.
