Burglaries in Essex Plummet by 30% Despite Pandemic
Essex has seen a dramatic drop in burglaries, with 2,664 fewer break-ins reported in the year ending July 2021 compared to the previous year. That’s a staggering 30% fall, according to the latest figures.
Downward Trend Started Before Lockdowns
While coronavirus restrictions from March 2020 to July 2021 likely played a role, the burglary decline began well before the pandemic hit. In fact, burglaries dropped by 14.3% (1,715 fewer offences) in the year ending July 2020 compared to the year before. The downward path was already clear in 2019, with 926 fewer reports than in 2018.
Police Vow to Keep Up the Pressure
Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow, Essex Police’s lead on burglary, said:
“The figures show a really promising trend, not just through the coronavirus pandemic when the country was subject to restrictions, but also before then. It is clear we are moving in the right direction – but there is no guarantee that will continue.”
He urged residents to stay vigilant as restrictions lift: “I would like everyone in the county to make protecting their home a top priority.”
Essex Police Take Burglary Seriously
Burglary is one of Essex Police’s top priorities. Ch Supt Anslow said:
“We know it has a significant impact on the wellbeing and safety of our victims. It is among the most violating of crimes.”
The force insists officers must attend every residential burglary unless there’s a solid reason, like the crime being historic with little evidential value. They also monitor hotspots, repeat victims, and known offenders actively.
Ch Supt Anslow added:
“Despite the positive figures and our focus, the biggest deterrent remains vigilant home security. Lock doors and windows, and keep car keys out of sight—even in lighter, warmer evenings.”
