Petrol Hits Eye-Watering £100 a Tank!
It’s a grim day for drivers across the UK. Filling a 55-litre family car now costs over £100 – that’s £100.27 for petrol and £103.43 for diesel, according to fresh data.
Simon Williams, RAC fuel spokesperson, slammed the soaring prices: “It’s a truly dark day for drivers today, with petrol now crossing the depressing £100 per tank mark.”
Prices Keep Climbing – No Relief in Sight
Average pump prices stand at an eye-watering 182.31p per litre for unleaded and 188.05p for diesel. Williams warned this spells more inflation pain: “Upward inflationary pressure is almost certain, which is bad news for everyone.”
With UK households reliant on their motors – some eight in ten according to RAC research – the question on everyone’s lips is whether the government will step in with more cash help. The 5p fuel duty cut from March looks paltry now, compared to wholesale petrol prices having jumped five times that since the Spring Statement (a whopping 25p hike!).
Government Rakes It In Despite Crisis
Despite the fuel price chaos, the government is still cashing in hefty sums. Brits pay around 30p in VAT per litre sold – up from 25p before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine started this price spiral. Plus, there’s the 53p per litre fuel duty.
Supermarkets Jack Up Prices Too
On Wednesday, supermarket unleaded prices soared by 2.5p to 175.91p per litre. Diesel crept up nearly 2p to 184.13p. Following Asda’s lead, other supermarkets quickly hiked their prices as well, squeezing drivers even more at the pumps.
