A migrant boat carrying 47 people has suffered a horrific disaster, with dozens feared drowned. The Mediterranea Saving Humans charity and Alarm Phone — which handles distress calls from migrant vessels — confirmed the tragedy on Twitter.

Distress Call Ignored?

Alarm Phone revealed it alerted authorities on Saturday, insisting the boat needed urgent help. Despite this, there’s been no official response yet. Mediterranea claims Italian authorities asked merchant ships to rescue the migrants but those vessels failed to act once on the scene.

Italy’s Rescue Efforts Under Fire

Italy’s ability to manage migrant rescues has been heavily criticised, especially after a deadly shipwreck near Calabria on February 26 killed at least 79 people. Saturday’s disaster underscores the perilous journey migrants face crossing the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
