More arrests as police continue to Police Extinction Rebellion

The Metropolitan Police Service continues to police the Extinction Rebellion protests which today, Tuesday, 16 July, moved to two areas of an industrial estate in Bow. In the early hours of this morning, protestors congregated at the entrance of the construction site which prevented companies within the area from being able to go about their daily business. As a result, a total of six people – three men and three women, aged between 30 and 67 – were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespassing and obstruction of a highway and taken into custody. Protestors have now left the area and have moved back to Waterloo where a policing presence remains in place. A policing plan is in operation to ensure the Met has the capability to respond quickly, make arrests and remove obstructions as necessary. Commander Jane Connors, said: “We absolutely recognise the right for people to protest however we will continue to take action against those who choose to break the law, to ensure disruption to Londoners is kept to a minimum. Police Liaison Teams remain in contact with organisers to understand their plans and ensure London remains open for business. “We are aware that protestors are expected to target the construction industry this week. We are engaging with business across the Capital and would urge anyone who become aware of protests taking place on their premises to contact police at the earliest opportunity by calling 101.” + A 63-year-old man was also arrested on Monday 15 July on suspicion of Section 5 of the Public Order Act on Exton Street, SE1. He remains in custody at this time.
