Two Teens Locked Up for Brutal Murder of 17-Year-Old Jodie Chesney
Two teenagers have been handed life sentences for the savage, unprovoked killing of 17-year-old Jodie Chesney in Harold Hill. Svenson Ong-a-Kwie, 19, and Aaron Isaacs, 17, were sentenced today at the Old Bailey after the court lifted reporting restrictions.
Ong-a-Kwie received a life sentence with a minimum of 26 years, while Isaacs got life with at least 18 years behind bars. The guilty verdicts came following a tense eight-week trial, watched closely by Jodie’s heartbroken family.
Tragic Night Turns Deadly in Amy’s Park
Jodie, a talented pianist, was enjoying a typical Friday with friends on March 1. After finishing college, she went home to Dagenham to walk her dog. Later, she and her boyfriend met up with close pals at Romford station before heading to Amy’s Park in Harold Hill.
While the group sat chatting and listening to music, Ong-a-Kwie and Isaacs entered the park and attacked. Jodie was stabbed once in the back. The killers fled in a black Vauxhall Corsa.
Swift Police Action and Heartbreaking Impact Statements
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams led a rapid investigation, arresting four suspects linked to the murder. A post-mortem confirmed Jodie’s death was caused by shock and haemorrhage.
“Jodie was not in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was simply living her life as a teenager should – carefree and with friends,” said DCI Whellams. “This marks the start of years behind bars for her killers. Our support will continue as the family grieves.”
Det Chief Supt Stephen Clayman condemned the knife violence gripping London boroughs. “Nothing justifies ending such a young life,” he said. He urged the public to come forward with info to help combat violent crime.
Family Left Devastated by Loss
Jodie’s father, Peter Chesney, described the murder as life-shattering. “I have no idea how to carry on or come to terms with this loss,” he said.
Her sister Lucy called Jodie her “best friend” and said her death left her terrified and anxious. “If someone as good as Jodie can be murdered, it could happen to anyone,” she said.
Cousin Kirsty recounted the shock of the fatal news while heavily pregnant, giving birth the same day as Jodie’s funeral. “One of the happiest days of my life was also one of the saddest,” she said. “We will never get over this, but we have to learn to live with it.”
Jodie Chesney will never be forgotten.
