Tragedy at Sea: Jersey Boat Sinks After Ferry Collision

On December 8, the Jersey-based vessel L’Ecume II sank following a collision with a Condor freight ferry. Two crew members, Jervis Baligat and Larry Simyunn, have been recovered, but skipper Michael Michieli remains missing.

Search for Skipper Continues Amid Uncertainty

Deputy Chief Minister Kirsten Morel told BBC 1 Jersey that authorities are weighing their next move. “We are considering options, including further diver searches or raising the vessel,” he said. “We need to evaluate these carefully. The search will continue, but the exact plan is not yet clear.”

Specialist Team Wraps Site Search

The survey boat Freja has completed its initial sweep of the wreck site. Mr Morel extended “heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this round-the-clock operation” and expressed sympathy for the families affected. “They will be fully supported and kept informed throughout the next stages,” he added.

Investigation and Fundraising Efforts Underway

  • More than £100,000 has been raised for the families of Baligat and Simyunn through a fundraising campaign.
  • The States of Jersey Police are leading an independent investigation with help from the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency Enforcement Team.
  • Jersey’s Maritime Standards and the Bahamas Maritime Authority, where the Condor vessel is registered, are conducting a safety investigation.
