Rishi Sunak Under Police Probe for Not Wearing Seat Belt
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing a Lancashire Police investigation after being filmed as a passenger in a moving car without a seat belt. The clip, shot during his visit to Lancashire, shows Sunak removing his seat belt to record a social media video.
Sunak Apologises for ‘Error of Judgement’
The PM has admitted the blunder and apologised. A spokesman said, “Mr Sunak fully accepts this was a mistake and apologises. He believes everyone should wear a seat belt.” The video was shared on Sunak’s Instagram to promote government “levelling up” spending.
Possible £500 Fine Looms Over Seat Belt Slip
Failing to wear a seat belt carries an on-the-spot fine of £100. If taken to court, the penalty can soar to £500. Passengers over 14 are responsible for buckling up themselves, while drivers must ensure younger passengers are secured.
Critics Mock Sunak’s Growing List of Gaffes
Labour slammed the video, calling it “endless painful viewing” after Sunak was seen struggling with a contactless card last year. A Labour spokeswoman said:
“Sunak doesn’t know how to use a seat belt, a debit card, a train, the economy, or this country. This list is growing by the day.”
The blunder follows criticism of Sunak flying an RAF jet on official trips from London to Blackpool and Darlington. Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper quipped, “The PM is getting too used to flying around in private jets that he’s forgotten to wear a seat belt in a car.”
