Prince Harry stunned the world with an unannounced visit to Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early on Thursday. The Duke of Sussex arrived by train after flying into Poland, taking the same perilous rail route most Westerners use due to Kyiv’s strict air travel bans amid the ongoing conflict.
Harry Delivers Powerful Message of Support
Arriving just a week after Russia’s deadliest drone and missile strike on Kyiv killed 17 and injured over 100, Harry spoke bluntly to ITV News. “I’m here to remind people back home and around the world what Ukraine is up against and to support the people and partners doing extraordinary work every hour of every day in incredibly tough conditions,” he declared. He praised Ukrainians for “bravely and successfully defending Europe’s eastern flank” and stressed the world must not forget their sacrifice. At the Kyiv Security Conference, Harry will tell delegates, “The world sees you and respects you.”
This Is More Than Just a War for Territory
The Duke will also argue Ukraine’s battle is “a war about values, not just territory.” It’s a message aimed at rallying global support for the embattled nation.
Harry: A Veteran Returning to Support Fellow Fighters
This marks Harry’s second visit to Kyiv. Last September, he visited injured veterans linked to the Invictus Games. In April 2024, he met wounded soldiers and young victims of the conflict in Lviv. Despite recent controversy over a tour in Australia with Meghan Markle, Harry’s commitment to supporting veterans remains unwavering. He also quietly honoured Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday by sending a wreath to her grave at Windsor Castle, skipping Buckingham Palace’s official events. With 10 years served in the British Army and two tours in Afghanistan under his belt, Harry’s latest trip highlights his ongoing dedication to Ukraine and those fighting for freedom.
