Sobs rang out at St Albans Crown Court as Wayne Hawes paid a moving tribute to his beloved wife, Zoe Hawes, who was killed in a shocking crash on the M25. The horrific accident happened when violent criminal Barancan Nurcin, driving a stolen van wrong way to evade cops, smashed into their car. The couple from Canvey were en route to Luton Airport for a four-day holiday celebrating Zoe’s 40th birthday.
Harrowing Hospital Fight and Shattered Family
Wayne Hawes spent weeks battling life-threatening injuries in an induced coma. When he briefly awoke, he wrote “Z” on a pad, desperate to know about his wife. Due to drug-induced memory loss, his family had to repeatedly break the devastating news of Zoe’s death. His sister described the heart-wrenching moment Wayne realised, tears streaming down his face. “I knew I had broken his heart,” she said.
Heartbreaking Courtroom Scene
The court heard deeply emotional victim statements that even brought prosecutor Mark Fenhalls KC to tears. Morgan Hawes, Wayne’s daughter and Zoe’s step-daughter, described the nightmare of telling her dad about his wife’s death over and over, as his memory failed him. She said he is now “a shadow of his former self,” crushed by grief.
Wayne and Zoe, who met in 2012, shared a blended family of eight children and ran a flooring business — Wayne as technician, Zoe handling the books. Morgan recounted how the family tried to brave Zoe’s 40th birthday just two days after the crash, doing their best for the kids despite their heartbreak.
Wayne’s Fight to Rebuild
A hospital video showed Wayne breaking down as he spoke of Zoe. “She was irreplaceable,” he said through tears. His injuries are severe — neck, hip, spine, legs, brain bleed, and sight loss in one eye. Despite needing a children’s sippy cup to drink, Wayne is determined to return to work at the flooring shop they built together.
His mother called him “the most hard-working man you could wish for” and lamented how Nurcin’s reckless actions tore apart their dream life. “Your actions have destroyed the most wonderful family,” she told the court.
The courtroom was filled with the raw grief of losing Zoe, a painful reminder of the brutal consequences of Nurcin’s criminal rampage.
