In a provocative act that has ignited further controversy, right-wing activist Tommy Robinson screened a banned documentary to a large crowd at a Trafalgar Square rally in London, risking potential jail time. The event, which saw violent clashes and resulted in nine arrests, escalated tensions in the capital.
The documentary, titled “Silenced,” centres around the libel case Robinson lost in 2021 involving Jamal Hijazi, a Syrian refugee schoolboy. Despite a court order prohibiting the dissemination of the film’s content, Robinson proceeded with the public screening and openly challenged authorities to arrest him, stating on social media, “I’ll be jailed for two years for showing the inconceivable truth.
Robinson is due to appear in the High Court on Tuesday facing charges of contempt for producing the film. The screening at Trafalgar Square not only defied legal restrictions but also inflamed existing divisions among the attendees and counter-protestors.
The rally, dubbed “Uniting The Kingdom,” was marked by a heavy police presence, with about 1,000 officers deployed to manage the crowd and prevent clashes between Robinson’s supporters and counter-protesters from groups like Stand Up To Racism.
Incidents of violence included scuffles outside a pub along Whitehall and multiple assaults on emergency workers. The Metropolitan Police reported that two men were arrested for grievous bodily harm after attacking an anti-racism protester.
As tensions escalated, other political and civic leaders called for calm and a measured response to the events unfolding. Robinson, however, remained defiant, concluding the rally with remarks that seemed to anticipate legal repercussions for his actions.
