Russia’s Drones Buzz NATO Airspace: Romania and Latvia on High Alert
Alarm bells are ringing across NATO’s eastern flank as Russian drones breach airspace over Romania and Latvia. Both NATO members are now investigating these risky incursions, sparking fresh fears of a widening security threat.
Romania Scrambles Jets After Drone Sighting
Romania’s defence ministry confirmed a Russian drone entered its airspace before heading towards Ukraine. Romanian F-16 fighters were scrambled to track the drone, which was last spotted near an uninhabited spot close to Periprava village. Authorities are assessing possible fallout from this brazen breach.
Latvian Drone Crash Fuels Tensions
At the same time, Latvia reported a drone crash near Rezekne, with evidence suggesting it crossed from Belarusian skies. Leonids Kalnins, commander of Latvia’s joint military HQ, revealed that the drone likely had no specific mission, but the incident has still raised red flags about renewed Russian drone activity in the region.
Latvian President Demands a NATO-Wide Fightback
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics called for a unified NATO response, urging all allies to step up coordination against the rising drone threat. Romania and Latvia, both staunch backers of Ukraine, worry these airspace violations could further destabilise the fragile security balance.
Officials from both countries insist on stronger collective measures and heightened vigilance. Working closely with NATO partners, they aim to safeguard their skies and send a clear message to Moscow: these drone breaches won’t be tolerated.
