Digital Devices Crack Crime Cases Wide Open, Says Top Prosecutor

Smart doorbells, dashcams, car GPS, and even Amazon Alexas are turning into crucial tools for cracking criminal cases, the UK’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) revealed today.

Tech Revolutionising Evidence Gathering

Speaking at the Westminster Policy Forum, Max Hill QC highlighted how digital tech is shaking up crime investigations. “Just 15 years ago, cops relied on crime scene clues, witnesses, and door-to-door inquiries,” he said. “Now, everyday gadgets like smartphones, social media, and Alexa devices are key to pinpointing locations, providing footage, and tracing timelines.”

He recalled how Alexa even helped solve a murder probe in the US, demonstrating the growing role of smart tech in justice.

Land Rover GPS Nail Crossbow Killer

Hill shared a striking example from this year: the GPS system in a Land Rover Discovery helped lock up a crossbow murderer. After the victim’s death, the suspect was grilled about owning crossbows, but real proof came two weeks later when GPS data was pulled from a burned-out vehicle linked to his partner.

  • The data showed the car did reconnaissance on the victim’s driveway the night before the murder.
  • The vehicle returned to the crime scene during the attack and stayed until 12 minutes after the shooting.
  • The GPS even tracked the boot opening and closing around the time of the murder.

The killer was promptly convicted and handed a life sentence.

Future of Crime Fighting: AI and Machine Learning

Hill stressed the need to keep pace with tech’s rapid evolution. “Old-school detectives could only dream of these tools,” he said. “But with new tech come new challenges.”

He points to machine learning and AI as instrumental in sifting through mountains of digital evidence faster and more reliably.

“Crime investigation in 2020 means blending the old with the new,” Hill added. “We must adapt fast or risk falling behind.”

CPS Boosts Tech to Tackle Massive Data

The Crown Prosecution Service is investing in cutting-edge technology to manage huge evidence troves while ensuring GDPR compliance. Enhanced search tools will help prosecutors quickly zero in on the evidence that matters most, making justice swifter and sharper.
