£25k Lifeline for Sussex Families Hit by Tragedy

Sussex families mourning loved ones lost to suicide or domestic abuse are getting a crucial helping hand. Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has announced a £25,000 funding boost for charity Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse (AAFDA).

The cash comes from a combined effort: £10,000 from Bourne’s office and £5,000 each from Brighton & Hove City Council, East Sussex County Council, and West Sussex County Council. This funding will supercharge AAFDA’s specialist support services right across Sussex.

Specialist Help When It’s Needed Most

The grant covers practical aid, emotional support, peer group sessions, expert guidance for agencies, and tailored help for children impacted by these heartbreaking deaths.

“AAFDA’s work is crucial in supporting families at their most vulnerable,” said PCC Katy Bourne. “This grant reflects a joint effort to make sure families get the specialist support they need after the homicide, suicide, or unexplained death of a loved one following domestic abuse.”

Charity Warns More Help Is Needed

AAFDA founder Frank Mullane welcomed the funding but urged continued support. The charity currently aids six grieving Sussex families.

“Behind every statistic is a grieving family,” Mullane said. “Our work helps them navigate complex systems, access justice, and begin to rebuild their lives.”

Training to Boost Agency Responses

The cash will also fund training for police, social workers, and health professionals. The goal: sharper, more compassionate responses when families face trauma and loss.

AAFDA is nationally renowned for expert advocacy during investigations, inquests, and court battles — ensuring families’ voices are heard loud and clear.

Could Sussex Lead the Way Nationwide?

Local officials hope Sussex’s fresh funding model—linking police, councils, and community cash—might spark similar schemes across the UK to support families after bereavement.

“Losing a loved one in these circumstances is devastating,” Bourne added. “By working together, we can make sure no family faces that pain alone.”
