A 49-year-old man has been locked up for 16 years for the horrific sexual abuse of a young boy in Littlehampton.

Matthew Johnston, from Tottenham, London, started grooming his victim in 2014, when the child was just four years old. Over several years, Johnston subjected the boy to repeated rapes and sexual assaults.

Comic-Con Predator Used Star Wars Events to Groom Victim

Johnston exploited his attendance at Comic-Con-style events, including Star Wars and superhero-themed gatherings, to target and manipulate the child. He used these fan meet-ups as a cover for his vile abuse.

The abuse only came to light in December 2024 when it was reported to Sussex Police, triggering a full-scale investigation led by specialist officers who supported the victim and his family throughout the ordeal.

Convicted on Multiple Charges at Hove Crown Court

Johnston was arrested and charged with:

  • Two counts of rape of a child under 13
  • Two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13
  • Two counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity
  • One count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child

On Friday, 10 October, he was found guilty on all counts at Hove Crown Court. Just days later, on Monday 23 March, the court sentenced him to 16 years behind bars, plus five years on extended licence for being a dangerous offender.

He was also slapped with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a Restraining Order, and will stay on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Detective Thanks Brave Victim Family

“Matthew Johnston groomed, manipulated and abused this young victim over many years, betraying the trust of the child and his family,” said Detective Constable Jacob Parkin.

“My thanks go to the victim and his family for their strength throughout this investigation. Bringing a dangerous offender to justice wouldn’t have been possible without their bravery.”

“If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse, contact Sussex Police. We are here to support and fight for justice.”
