Joanne Frost, 42, faced devastation when her teenage son’s e-bike battery exploded into flames inside their London home last June, reducing the house to ruins in just 15 minutes. Fire crews were called after neighbours spotted smoke as the fire engulfed the front room where the e-bike was kept.
The incident left Joanne, her son Olly, and a friend trapped until rescued by a passerby with a ladder.
Rapid Fire Spread
The blaze started with a loud bang, caught by Olly, 16, trapped in his bedroom alongside a friend and a dog. Neighbours rushing to help prevented further tragedy by swiftly evacuating all inside.
Joanne described how her 24-year-old home and new kitchen appliances were destroyed in a matter of minutes, leaving the family homeless.
Aftermath And Trauma
Joanne and Olly have both been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder following the fire. Joanne has been living in temporary accommodation for 10 months and recalls staying in a Travelodge for six weeks.
She warned others about the dangers of substandard e-bike batteries and charging indoors.

Joanne urges buyers to get e-bikes from reputable retailers and avoid converted kits. She warns against overnight charging and advises charging only outside or in a non-living area to reduce fire risks.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson recommends keeping e-bikes outdoors if possible, and never charging or storing them near escape routes inside homes.
Legal Rules For E-bikes
In the UK, legally roadworthy e-bikes must have pedals and a motor that cuts out above 15.5 mph. Bikes exceeding these speed or power limits are treated as motorbikes and require tax and insurance.
