Dramatic E-Bike Fire in Ilford Puts Ten Lives at Risk
A serious house blaze ripped through a mid-terraced home on Northbrook Road, Ilford yesterday. The fire, sparked by a faulty e-bike battery, forced a dramatic rescue of ten residents – including a baby – who barely escaped the inferno.
Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze
The alarm rang out just after 10 a.m., prompting a rapid response. Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters descended on the scene. The raging flames engulfed the ground floor, stairwell, and much of the first floor. Fire crews wrestled the fire under control by 11:50 a.m., but the damage was severe.
Harrowing Rescue Efforts Save the Day
- Two adults escaped via a first-floor rear window.
- Three adults and two kids got out thanks to scaffolding hastily erected by a passing builder.
- A woman took a desperate leap from a first-floor window.
- A baby was safely caught by a member of the public.
- One man made a break through the front door amid the chaos.
Three adults and a child were rushed to hospital, while four adults and two children received treatment at the scene. The London Fire Brigade confirmed the fire was caused when an e-bike battery stored in the hallway near the front door malfunctioned.
Rising Risks as E-Bike Fires Surge Across London
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Field warned about the dangers of improper e-bike storage and charging. “The fire spread rapidly, highlighting the urgent need for safe practices,” he said. London has seen a sharp rise in e-bike and e-scooter fires – with around 170 reported just this year.
The incident shines a spotlight on the fire hazards linked to lithium batteries in electric vehicles. London Fire Brigade’s ongoing #ChargeSafe campaign aims to raise awareness, especially as the new Product Safety & Metrology Bill promises tighter regulations.
They also warn against dodgy batteries, chargers, and conversion kits sold online, which can fail catastrophically. With electric transport booming, experts urge users to be vigilant and follow strict safety guidelines.
