Armed officers from the Met’s elite SO15 unit rushed to St Thomas’ Hospital near Westminster. The cause of the alert remains unclear, with police keeping tight-lipped.

As a safety precaution, officers also blocked the River Thames crossing nearby, stopping all traffic in both directions.
