Bus Driver Escapes Jail After Tragic Death Outside Victoria Station
Olusofa Popoola, 61, has been spared jail after a fatal bus crash outside London Victoria station killed pedestrian Melissa Burr, 32. The harrowing incident happened on August 10, 2021, leaving Ms Burr dead and another driver injured.
Fatal Crash at Terminus Place
On that fateful morning, Popoola’s bus accidentally accelerated into the back of a stationary vehicle at Terminus Place. The push caused the parked bus to hit Ms Burr, who was crossing towards it on a pedestrian walkway. Ms Burr suffered multiple fatal injuries, while the other driver, Diane Mathuranayagum, broke an eye socket.
Barely Dangerous Driving, Says Judge
During the court case, Popoola admitted to careless driving, explaining he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. He was cleared of charges for dangerous driving causing death or serious injury after a retrial.
Judge Rebecca Trowler handed Popoola an 18-month prison sentence suspended for two years. She cited his personal circumstances and concerns over high prison populations as reasons for the lenient ruling.
“His driving fell just short of dangerous,” Judge Trowler said, stressing Melissa Burr was not at fault in her own death.
Family Left Heartbroken as Bus Driver Walks Free
Ms Burr’s family was devastated as Popoola left court a free man. Her mother, Trish Burr, called her daughter’s loss a “life sentence.” Her brother, Graham Burr, voiced disbelief that a seasoned driver could make such a fatal error.
Judge Trowler praised the family for their dignity throughout the trial.
Life After the Crash
Popoola lost his job over the crash and must now complete 140 hours of unpaid work and faces a three-year driving ban. He is currently studying cyber security. The tragic accident has left him deeply shaken and haunted by the loss.
