Hove’s Station Footbridge SHUT after Storm Damage
The key footbridge at Hove Station was slammed shut last week after fierce storms left it unsafe. Engineers uncovered major damage to the roof and wooden steps, forcing a full closure that’s causing chaos for locals and rail commuters alike.
Long Detours Spark Frustration
Commuters now face long detours via Fonthill Road and an underpass just to cross the station. What was once a quick shortcut has turned into a tiresome trek while urgent repairs get underway.
Rotten Wood and Structural Woes
Initial inspections seriously underestimated the damage. Engineers discovered rotten wooden joints and steps that need complete replacement. Contractors are teaming up with Brighton & Hove City Council and Network Rail to reinforce the bridge and replace worn parts.
“I know how inconvenient this is for residents and passengers and how important it is to make it safe and reopen as soon as we can. The bridge is a valued community asset, and this is an opportunity to give it a new lease of life,” said Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport and City Infrastructure.
Repair Work Set to Finish Soon
The extensive repair job should wrap up within a week, aiming for a full reopening by the end of next weekend. Councillor Muten praised locals for their patience and hailed the quick teamwork between council staff, Network Rail, and contractors M Group (Rail) and HRS (Rail).
