Drug-Fuelled Driver’s Wild Police Chase Ends in Jail

In the early hours of Sunday, 24 July last year, Mohammed Mehtab sparked chaos on the streets of Dogsthorpe. Traffic officers spotted him driving a black Volkswagen Tiguan erratically on Garton End Road. When they signalled him to pull over, Mehtab hit the gas – driving on the wrong side and crashing into another car. The collision forced the other vehicle to swerve into the pursuing police car’s path.

Mehtab fled the scene without stopping. One passenger in the damaged car had to be cut free by emergency services. The culprit abandoned his Tiguan on nearby Elmfield Road. Officers later found him asleep in a front garden, reeking of booze. He was nearly three times over the drink-drive limit and was already banned from driving following a previous conviction in March.

£3,770 Worth of Drugs Found in Car

A search of the Tiguan uncovered nearly £3,770 worth of heroin and crack cocaine. Despite being bailed pending further enquiries, Mehtab’s trouble was just beginning.

More Police Pursuits and Drug Busts

On 23 August, traffic officers spotted Mehtab again – this time in a silver Ford Focus – driving recklessly in central Peterborough. He mounted a kerb exiting a roundabout on Bourges Boulevard and was clocked doing 65 mph in a 30 mph zone. The chase ended when he crashed into railings on Thorpe Road.

Mehtab and his passenger, 20-year-old Shamriz Ali, tried to make a run for it towards the train station. Ali was caught with 82 wraps of crack cocaine and heroin, plus £397 in cash. Mehtab was detained shortly after, found with £104, and again over twice the legal drink-drive limit.

Police found £326 cash, around £1,500 of crack cocaine and heroin, and drug-dealing messages on a phone in the crashed Focus. Both men were bailed while investigations continued.

Final Chase Leads to Jail Sentences

Less than three weeks later, on 15 September, Mehtab was caught driving erratically in Bourges Boulevard once more. After ignoring officers’ signals to stop, he led police on a pursuit before crashing at a dead end on Lincoln Road, near Rhubarb Bridge.

In the car’s passenger footwell, police discovered £7,300 worth of crack cocaine and heroin, cannabis, burner phones, and £762 cash.

Mehtab, from Duke Street, Greater Manchester, appeared at Bradford Crown Court on 27 October. He was jailed for four-and-a-half years after admitting multiple offences including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, drink driving, failure to stop, possession of cannabis, acquiring criminal property, and four counts of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Ali, from Foston Lane, Bradford, was sentenced to three years and nine months for possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin. He received an additional 18 months for affray, knife possession in public, and other drug offences in West Yorkshire, bringing his total to five years and three months behind bars.
