Man Dragged 71-Year-Old Granny Down Stairs in Shocking Barmouth Attack

David Redfern, 46, from Barmouth, North Wales, has been sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court for the violent death of Margaret Barnes, 71, from Birmingham. The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of July 11, 2022, on Marine Parade in Barmouth.

Brutal Assault Led to “Un-Survivable” Injuries

During the trial, chilling details emerged about the attack. Redfern dragged Ms Barnes down the stairs and was accused of kicking or stamping on her. The pathologist revealed her liver injuries were “un-survivable,” comparable to trauma seen in serious car crashes.

Judge Condemns Redfern’s “Aggressive and Offensive” Behaviour

The judge slammed Redfern’s conduct, describing it as “aggressive and offensive.” Things only went “terribly wrong” after Redfern called the police. Redfern claimed he confronted Ms Barnes after finding her in his bed, holding a drink and surrounded by what appeared to be her belongings—calling this reaction “entirely appropriate.”

Terrifying Trigger: Bag Theft Accusation Sparks Violence

The court heard the flashpoint came when Ms Barnes accused Redfern’s partner, Nicola Learoyd-Lewis, of stealing her handbag and then lunged at her following the police call. From outside the house, Redfern watched as Ms Barnes behaved in a “threatening” manner trying to collect her stuff.

In contrast, Ms Learoyd-Lewis acted “gently” and “carefully,” helping the unsteady Ms Barnes out of the property safely.
