Drama in Hollingbourne: Sean O’Meara, 37, was critically injured during a tense armed police showdown near the Park Gate Inn on Monday night (7 July). The incident took place in the village of Hollingbourne, just off the A20 near Maidstone.
Chainsaw-Wielding Suspect Sparks Chaos
O’Meara was reportedly decked out in body armour and a gas mask. Police say he was armed with a chainsaw and what looked like a homemade firearm or improvised explosive device. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the serious incident.
“We are heartbroken by the events that occurred. Our son remains in critical condition and our focus is entirely on him as we pray for his recovery,” said Sean’s mother, Catherine O’Meara. “We are helping with the police investigation and thank our friends and neighbours for their support during this incredibly difficult time.”
Police Standoff Turns Intense
The drama kicked off when officers went to arrest Sean O’Meara on suspicion of assault at his home. He refused to surrender, forcing unarmed police to back off. Armed units then swooped in around 7.15pm. O’Meara was hit with baton rounds and reportedly hid behind a hedge before being confronted by officers.
A police spokesperson said: “Officers attended a property in Ashford Road, Hollingbourne, to conduct an arrest on an outstanding warrant unrelated to terrorism. During the incident, a man in his 30s was shot and taken to hospital. The area was secured with support from EOD. A referral was made to the IOPC, which is investigating.”
