Armed Police Fire Shot During SW London Car Stop Linked to Southampton Murder
An armed police intervention in south-west London turned dramatic on Sunday night after officers fired a shot during a car stop tied to a brutal murder in Southampton. The non-fatal shooting has sparked a full investigation.
Man Fatally Stabbed in Southampton
Hampshire Police were called to Langhorn Road just after midday on Sunday (24 July) following reports of a serious assault on a 19-year-old local man. The victim suffered a fatal puncture wound to the chest and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police Follow Suspect Car Into London
Officers quickly identified a car they believe was involved. The vehicle crossed into the Metropolitan Police Service area and was followed by armed response units. At around 9pm, police stopped the car at the junction of King’s Road and Beaufort Street in Chelsea.
One Shot Fired, Four Men Arrested
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed a single shot was fired from a police firearm, hitting one of the men in the hand. His injury is not life-threatening, and he remains in hospital. The other three men in the vehicle were arrested at the scene.
“The discharge of firearms by police officers is relatively rare,” said IOPC Regional Director Graham Beesley. “But where potentially lethal force has been used, it is critical that we conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances.”
IOPC Launches Independent Probe
The IOPC is now investigating, reviewing police radio communications, bodycam footage, and officers’ testimony. All the officers involved are being treated as witnesses. The probe aims to clarify exactly how events unfolded during the tense SW London stand-off.
