David Cameron Reveals Private Battle with Prostate Cancer
Former Prime Minister Lord David Cameron has gone public about his secret fight with prostate cancer. It all began when his wife urged him to get a routine health check. A PSA test then revealed “worryingly high” levels, sparking a cancer diagnosis.
Shock Diagnosis from a Routine Check
Lord Cameron opened up to The Times about the gut-wrenching moment he found out he had cancer. “You have an MRI scan with a few black marks on it. You think, ‘Ah, that’s probably OK.’ But when the biopsy comes back, and it says you have got prostate cancer,” he said.
“You always dread hearing those words. And then literally as they’re coming out of the doctor’s mouth, you’re thinking, ‘Oh, no, he’s going to say it.’ Then came the next decision. Do you get treatment? Or do you watch and wait?”
Cameron Beats Cancer and Demands Screening Programme
Opting for focal therapy, Lord Cameron’s treatment worked wonders. A follow-up MRI confirmed he is now officially cancer-free. He’s now rallying behind a targeted prostate cancer screening programme.
“I want to, as it were, come out. I want to add my name to the long list of people calling for a targeted screening programme,” he declared.
NHS Poised to Launch First National Prostate Cancer Screening
The Government’s National Screening Committee (NSC) is set to decide on introducing the UK’s first nationwide prostate cancer screening scheme. Experts believe this move could detect thousands of cases early and save countless lives.
Screening would initially focus on men at highest risk, including those with family history or genetic markers. Prostate cancer remains the UK’s most common male cancer, with 63,000 new cases and 12,000 deaths each year.
