Met Police Crack Down on Drug-Drivers in London
The Met’s Road and Transport Policing Command launched a blitz targeting drug-impaired drivers across the capital. From 16 to 29 August, officers stopped and tested 241 motorists, nabbing 53 suspected of driving under the influence.
Danger on the Roads: Drugs Behind the Wheel
The campaign aimed not just to catch offenders but also to educate drivers on the deadly risks of drugged driving. Police warned that drug use behind the wheel is reckless and puts lives at risk.
“There is absolutely no reason for anyone to drive after taking drugs. It is reckless and totally unnecessary,” said PC Jeremy Dunlop.
“Our message is clear — drive safely or face the full consequences in court.”
Tragic Reminder: Elderly Pedestrian Killed by Cocaine-Driver
The crackdown comes after a fatal 2019 crash where 85-year-old Reuben Armstrong was knocked down by a cocaine-affected driver. The culprit, Tina Nowland, was jailed for over four years last month at Kingston Crown Court.
Reuben’s niece Caroline Lashley said: “The minute you take cannabis, cocaine, speed, whatever, you lose control.
“You’re driving a vehicle, putting yourself and others at risk — just like what happened to my uncle, who had every right to live. You can’t always control other people, but you can control yourself.”
