Isle of Wight Driver Banned After Shocking Crash Leaves Woman Seriously Injured
Samuel Paul Taylor, 26, from the Isle of Wight, has been slapped with a six-month driving ban following a terrifying head-on collision near East Cowes earlier this year.
Chaos on Whippingham Road
Emergency services, including the Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance, rushed to the scene after two vehicles collided on Whippingham Road. Fire crews had to cut a woman free from her wrecked car before she was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with life-changing injuries.
“I was involved in a near-fatal collision,” the injured woman said in a victim impact statement.
Driver Pleads Guilty to Careless Driving
Taylor, a mobile tyre fitter from Sandown, was also hurt but escaped serious injury. The court heard he drove on the wrong side of the road, pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention.
Isle of Wight Magistrates Court fined Taylor £300 with a £30 surcharge on top, alongside the six-month ban. His lawyer, Keith Verrinder, told the court Taylor didn’t think he was speeding and couldn’t explain how he lost control.
Taylor suggested slippery road conditions might have played a part. Meanwhile, the 55-year-old driver of the other car says they don’t recall what happened.
