Gunbattle Erupts Between Smuggling Gangs at France’s Biggest Migrant Camp

Two Iraqi migrants lie in hospital with serious injuries after rival people-smuggler gangs opened fire at the Grande Synthe camp in Dunkirk, northern France.

Territory Wars Turn Deadly at Dunkirk Camp

The fighting broke out between Kurdish-controlled gangs over prime launching spots for their tiny boats crossing the English Channel. Grande Synthe, France’s largest migrant camp housing up to 500 people, is a known hotbed for gang turf wars.

A migrant witness described seeing men armed with pistols and rifles. “It was many, many shots fired,” he said. “Previously we’ve had fights but it was very small. This time there were a lot of gunshots. The volunteers ran away.”

Another bystander told Le Parisien they heard bursts resembling Kalashnikov fire. “Everyone got down on the ground.”

Police Investigate Amid Fear and Silence

The public prosecutor is probing the violence, but with the camp’s constantly shifting population and victims too injured to talk, authorities face a tough job.

  • Bullet casings were recovered at the scene.
  • Witnesses are hesitant to come forward.
  • Many residents may flee immediately to Britain.

Volunteer group Utopia 56 confirmed at least three people were hospitalised. Emergency responders scrambled as a helicopter was destroyed in the chaos.

UK Authorities Warn of Ruthless Gang Exploitation

Britain’s Border Force has long warned how migrants are forced into perilous Channel crossings under threat of knife or gun. Officials say gangs use intimidation to ensure passengers don’t question unsafe boats.

Richard Lederle, Home Office crime unit: “It isn’t an option choosing to get into the boats. It’s about protecting profits as gangs compete.”

Christopher Tilley, Channel crossings unit chief: “Their business depends on word of mouth. They force people on unsafe boats to maximise profits. It’s ruthless and cut-throat.”

The deadly dispute at Grande Synthe underlines the brutal underworld driving the migrant crisis on Europe’s doorstep.
