Kent Police Honours Heroes in Heart-Stopping Acts of Bravery
On Tuesday, 22 March 2022, Kent Police recognised brave officers and civilians at the Police Training College. Eleven officers and staff received long service awards for their unwavering commitment and dedication.
Knife Attack in Maidstone – Officers Save Stabbed Man
On 3 July 2021, PC Matthew Smart and PC Matthew Murray were on patrol in Maidstone when a crowd on Lower Stone Street flagged them down. They found a man lying stabbed multiple times.
Joined shortly by Sergeant Steven Tuncliffe, a trained Police Medic, the trio administered first aid and managed the throng for 15 tense minutes until ambulance crews arrived. The victim survived, and three men responsible are set for sentencing. All three officers received commendations for their quick thinking and bravery.
Knife-Wielding Thief Tackled in Northfleet Shop Robbery
Back in July 2019, an armed thief tried to steal booze from a Northfleet shop. Manager Harry Goraya, his son Jaspal, and a passerby confronted the robber—who pulled a knife—but they didn’t back down. When he fled on a stolen bike, they pursued and tackled him with help from other brave members of the public.
The thug was arrested and charged. The trio earned the prestigious National Police Public Bravery Award for their fearless actions.
Off-Duty Heroes Win Royal Humane Award After Dover Collapse
In January 2021, a man collapsed in the street in Dover. Off-duty PCSO Carl Brett, two Border Force officers Hayley Ions and Sarah Parker, and two members of the public, Daniel Sandy and Glenn Emery, jumped into action.
Delivering CPR for over 40 minutes, they kept the man alive until paramedics arrived. Daniel Sandy even fetched a defibrillator from his van. Their life-saving efforts bagged them a Royal Humane Society Award.

Every day, our officers put themselves at risk to protect the community’s most vulnerable. These awards are well-deserved, and it was a pleasure to present these commendations.”
