Prison Officer Jailed for Sex with Inmate at HMP Birmingham
A prison officer has been locked up for 16 months after admitting to having sex with an inmate at HMP Birmingham. Shania Begum, 25, from Telford, pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office at Birmingham Crown Court on January 11.
Suspicious Staff Trigger Prison Probe
Staff at the Category B jail in Winson Green grew wary of Begum and her suspicious relationship with a prisoner. The alarm bells led to a full investigation by the Regional Prison Intelligence Unit.
Begum, who started working at the prison in December 2018, would take the inmate to private areas under the guise of supervision. It was in these secluded spots that the pair engaged in consensual sexual activity — completely out of sight from other officers and prisoners.
Caught in the Act and Brought to Justice
The investigation caught Begum red-handed. She was arrested on October 3, 2022, but initially refused to answer questions about the illicit affair. Faced with overwhelming evidence, she later pleaded guilty.
“Begum’s behaviour has destroyed the public’s trust in her as a prison officer,” said Detective Constable Adam McHugh of the West Midlands Regional Prison Intelligence Unit. “We are committed to upholding the highest standards in our prisons. She now faces her own time behind bars.”
