Ex-prison officer jailed for secret sex affair with burglar inmate
Prison Scandal: Officer Turns ‘Queen’ for Convict
Katie Evans, 26, a former prison officer at HMP Doncaster, has been jailed for 21 months after admitting serious misconduct. She secretly wooed inmate Daniel Brownley, serving five-and-a-half years for burglary, attempted robbery, and handling stolen goods. Evans even called herself “his queen” in private messages.
Forbidden Flings and Smuggled Chats
- Between March and November 2020, Evans performed a sex act on Brownley inside the prison walls.
- She made 140 phone calls on a smuggled SIM card – including 39 calls in one day.
- Evans bragged about collecting £1,000 linked to cannabis deals.
- She leaked confidential prison info to the criminal inmate.
Judge Slams ‘Serious Corruption’ – Sends Evans Down
Sentencing, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC blasted Evans’ betrayal as “a serious breach of trust” undermining faith in the prison system. He said:
“There must be a prison sentence. Corrupt prison officers must be punished. The public expects punishment for those who betray trust in the way that you did.”
The judge confirmed Evans indulged in oral sex with Brownley and used a false name to hide her identity. She even helped him with money handling and security chats inside jail.
Weeping Mum’s Sentence Reduced on Mercy Grounds
Evans, a mother-of-one, broke down in tears as her original two-year term was cut to 21 months because of her young daughter. Her barrister argued she was “immature and vulnerable” and manipulated by Brownley.
But Judge Richardson insisted the gravity of her crimes demanded tough punishment. Evans now faces prison time – ending one of the biggest scandals to hit HMP Doncaster.
