Soldier Jailed Nearly 10 Years for Brutal Taxi Driver Attack

A former soldier has been locked up for nine years and nine months after launching a ruthless, unprovoked assault on a taxi driver. Steffan Rhys Wilson, 26, from Llanybydder, West Wales, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause serious harm at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday, 3 November 2020.

Critical Brain Injury and Lifelong Impact

The victim, a 43-year-old taxi driver from Northallerton, suffered a horrific brain injury and remained in a coma for two months at James Cook University Hospital. He now faces debilitating health problems affecting his life and that of his family.

Violence on a Night Out Turns Deadly

The shocking attack happened near Little Holtby on the A6055 in the early hours of 1 December 2019. Wilson got into the taxi outside Club Amadeus around 3am but suddenly launched the savage assault upon arrival at their destination.

As police arrived, Wilson turned violent on officers too, punching a female PC and strangling a male sergeant. Both feared for their lives after Wilson threatened: “I was going to kill him and I was going to kill you.”

Military Career Ends & Motive Still a Mystery

Wilson was discharged from the Army’s Royal Engineers for gross misconduct and was due to face trial for attempted murder. Instead, his guilty plea to the lesser charge was accepted.

Northallerton CID’s Detective Inspector Matt Wilkinson said Wilson offered no credible reason for his savage attack, claiming he was drunk and thought he was on a military exercise. Investigations found no evidence of PTSD or other triggers.

Family Left Struggling After Birthday Attack

The taxi driver was released from hospital in March but continues to battle vision, coordination, and mood problems. His wife has shouldered heavy caring duties alone during Covid-19 restrictions, relying on support from the local Malayali community.

“The family are struggling financially and their children need extra support at school,” added DI Wilkinson. “It’s a tragic case made worse as it was the victim’s birthday on the day of the attack.”

Once seen as a promising soldier and rugby player, Wilson’s violent outburst has left three victims shattered and searching for justice.
