Worcestershire Man Jailed After Drink-Drive Crash That Killed Young Dad Over a Burger Run

A Worcestershire man has been locked up for four years after a drink-drive trip for a late-night burger ended in tragedy. Richard Storry, 34, caused the death of 27-year-old Chris Burgess in a fatal head-on collision in Basingstoke.

Drink-Drive Horror on the A339

Storry, from Evesham Road, Worcestershire, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving while over the legal alcohol limit. He was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court and banned from driving for three years.

On May 12, Storry decided to take his parents’ Volkswagen Tiguan from Lasham Airfield to Basingstoke for a burger – despite being nearly twice the drink-drive limit.

Tragically, he drove a quarter of a mile the wrong way down the A339 at Winslade before smashing head-on into Chris Burgess’s Volkswagen Golf. Mr Burgess, from Alton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Warn of Deadly Risks of Drink-Driving

“Time and again, we see the devastating results of drink-driving,” said Sgt Darren Ord from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit in Eastleigh.

“Many think it won’t happen to them, but the death of Mr Burgess could have been avoided if Storry hadn’t made the reckless decision to drive after drinking.”

“This sentence can’t undo the pain caused to Mr Burgess’s family but it sends a powerful message: drink-driving is not worth the risk and will not be tolerated.”

“Our teams are cracking down on drink and drug driving this summer. This is the harsh reality of what can happen behind the wheel after drinking.”

The Cost of a Reckless Decision

  • Storry drove over the drink-drive limit, risking lives.
  • Did a burger run – ended in deadly crash.
  • Chris Burgess, just 27, lost his life.
  • Four years in prison plus three-year driving ban for Storry.

This heart-breaking case is a stark reminder: never drink and drive. The price can be fatal.
