Tragedy in Annfield Plain: Man Dies After Brutal Assault
Police have launched a murder probe after local man Thomas Mallaby, 40, died from injuries sustained in a vicious attack.
Attack at Garage in Early Hours
Officers were called to a Morrison Road garage at 2.40am on Sunday after reports of a serious assault. Thomas was rushed to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for emergency treatment but tragically died the following afternoon on September 28.
Teen Arrested as Investigation Intensifies
A 15-year-old boy was arrested on Monday in connection with the assault. He has been questioned by Durham Constabulary’s Major Crime Team and released on bail pending further inquiries.
Detective Superintendent Speaks Out
“This was a truly tragic incident, and my thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Mallaby following their devastating loss,” said Detective Superintendent Dave Ashton.
“We are working to establish exactly what happened. I want to reassure the community we are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident.
“Although it took place on a fuel station forecourt, it’s not linked to the recent fuel shortage issues.”
The victim’s family are being supported by specialist officers as the investigation continues.
