Nottinghamshire’s Top Cop Wins Big for Mental Health Push

Kate Taylor: 20 Years Strong

Detective Constable Kate Taylor has clocked 20 years with Nottinghamshire Police. Since 2021, she’s been one of the force’s dedicated Wellbeing Champions, putting health and happiness front and centre for her colleagues.

Leading the Wellness Charge

Kate’s mission? To listen, support, and guide officers through tough times. She’s not just focused on her own Public Protection unit but reaches across the whole force with initiatives that boost both mind and body.

She pioneered Canicross – running through the woods with dogs – teaming up with a local trainer to offer police discounts, and spreading the word via the force’s Intranet. It’s a fresh take on fitness that lifts spirits and improves mental health.

Her other bold move? Challenging officers to run the equivalent of a 516-mile scenic sprint around Scotland’s north coast. Using an app to track and share progress, teams encouraged each other, smashing physical and mental goals.

More Than Just Runs and Dogs

Kate has pushed other well-being perks, too. She’s urged staff to get flu jabs and brought in therapy dogs to her department, helping those who face traumatic cases cope better day-to-day.

Wellbeing Award Winner

On April 25, Kate was crowned winner of the Wellbeing category at the Nottinghamshire Police Force Awards. Detective Sergeant Amy Revill, who nominated her, said:

“A career in the police force can often be extremely stressful with constant exposure to situations and trauma that most people never have to face. It’s essential officers protect their physical and mental health – and Kate is an invaluable asset to the organisation in this respect.”

Kate told us she was “honoured” to win. She added:

“I am proud to be a Wellbeing Champion and even prouder to receive the award. As a detective, I am aware of the stressful and traumatic situations police officers and staff are exposed to, sometimes daily. Taking responsibility to look after your mental health is therefore paramount, and this motivated me to support my colleagues to do so.

Mental resilience and good physical health, in my opinion, is vital to being a productive and successful member of Nottinghamshire Police. In order to serve the public it is important that we also look after ourselves and each other.”
