British Airways flight to Cyprus forced to turn back mid-air over France due to suspected flight control glitch.
Emergency U-Turn Over Northern France
Flight BA2780, an Airbus A320 en route from London Gatwick to Pafos, Cyprus, made an unexpected U-turn over northern France less than an hour after takeoff. Flight trackers showed the plane briefly holding before reversing course across the English Channel, heading back to Gatwick.
The aircraft touched down safely back at London Gatwick shortly after 1:30pm on Sunday, 1st June 2025.
Flight Control Issue Sparks Return
Reports on aviation watchdog sites @FlightEmergency and @AvSourceNews reveal the crew detected a flight control issue mid-flight. British Airways has yet to confirm the exact fault but insists the decision to return was precautionary to ensure passenger safety.
“BA2780’s return to base appears consistent with a precautionary response to a suspected flight control system anomaly — a standard safety-first decision in commercial aviation,” said aviation analyst @Shauns_Aviation.
Passengers Await New Flights
Ground staff at Gatwick are assisting passengers affected by the disruption. British Airways is expected to offer alternative flights or rebooking options to get travellers to Cyprus as soon as possible.
There are no reports of injuries and all safety protocols were followed during the incident.
Investigation Launched into Technical Fault
The Airbus A320 is now undergoing thorough engineering checks to find the root cause of the flight control anomaly. Aviation authorities have been notified and standard procedures are being followed.
More updates will be shared as the investigation develops.
