A drug dealer who killed a cyclist while carrying out a reckless overtake has been jailed for more than 10 years after admitting causing death by dangerous driving. Sohail Jahangir, 23, of Woodview, Bradford, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on Thursday 16 July after fatally striking Adrian Stocks, 59, as he trained for a charity cycle ride. Jahangir was jailed for seven years and seven months for causing Mr Stocks’ death by dangerous driving. The sentence was combined with further prison terms for drug dealing and a separate dangerous driving offence, taking his total sentence to 10 years and seven months.
Cyclist killed during reckless overtake
The court heard the fatal collision happened at around 5pm on Sunday 2 April 2023 on Denton Road, near Ilkley. Mr Stocks was cycling away from Ilkley towards Otley and had indicated he was turning right into the junction at Denton Bridge. A vehicle travelling behind him slowed appropriately, allowing the experienced cyclist space to complete his manoeuvre. However, Jahangir, who was driving a blue Audi Q2, approached from behind and chose to overtake both the waiting car and the cyclist without ensuring the road ahead was clear. As Mr Stocks turned right, Jahangir collided with him, inflicting catastrophic injuries. Despite desperate attempts by members of the public to administer first aid at the scene, Mr Stocks died from his injuries.
Guilty plea on day of trial
Jahangir denied the offence throughout the police investigation and subsequent court proceedings before changing his plea to guilty on the day his trial was due to begin on 5 May 2026.
Drug dealing offences
In addition to the fatal driving offence, Jahangir received two concurrent two-year prison sentences after admitting drug offences committed in Bradford between April and June 2025. The offences included:
- Being concerned in the supply of heroin.
- Being concerned in the supply of crack cocaine.
- Possessing crack cocaine with intent to supply.
He also received a 10-month prison sentence for a separate dangerous driving offence committed in Bradford during 2024.
Lengthy driving ban
Alongside his custodial sentence, Jahangir was disqualified from driving for 15 years and two months. Before he can regain his licence, he must successfully complete an extended driving test. The court also ordered the forfeiture of three vehicles linked to the case. The sentence brings to a close a lengthy investigation into the fatal collision, which claimed the life of a man who was preparing for a charity cycling event when his journey was tragically cut short.
