Building Collapse Sparks Emergency Rush in South East London
Emergency crews were scrambled after a partial building collapse on Honour Oak Road, South East London, at around 5.30pm on Monday, December 19th.
Firefighters and Specialists Battle to Secure Scene
Fire engines from Forest Hill, New Cross, Greenwich, and Peckham raced to the scene, joined by specialist USAR teams from Heston and Croydon. A gable end of the building—an art workshop—had collapsed, prompting fears of further damage. Nearby homes were evacuated as a safety precaution.
Local council building control and emergency scaffolders were called in to stabilise the structure. Multiple cordons have been set up with road closures disrupting traffic. Drivers are urged to find alternative routes while investigations continue.
Residents Escape Before Collapse
Two residents inside the affected building managed to self-rescue before emergency services arrived but are now homeless as the building is deemed structurally unsafe.
Station Commander Dan Capon said: “Honor Oak Park was closed whilst crews made the scene safe and a 25-metre cordon was put in place as a precaution. One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used as an observational tower at the scene to assess damage from above.”
London Fire Brigade Confirms No Injuries
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson confirmed: “Firefighters were called to a building collapse on Honor Oak Park in Lewisham. The wall at the front of the roof of a terraced building used as a shop and art studio collapsed. Firefighters carried out a full search of the building and removed loose masonry. There were no reports of any injuries. The Brigade was called at 17:24 and the incident was over for firefighters by 21:15.”
Fire crews from New Cross, Greenwich, Peckham, Forest Hill, and surrounding stations all attended the incident.
