Teen Jailed for Brutal Murder of Schoolboy ‘Fred’ in Northampton
15-Year-Old Locked Up for 13 Years Over Fatal Stabbing
A 15-year-old boy has been handed a 13-year sentence in a Young Offenders Institute for the savage murder of 16-year-old Rohan “Fred” Shand. Fred was stabbed to death near the Cock Hotel on Harborough Road, Kingsthorpe, Northampton, as he walked home from school on March 22.
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted after a four-week trial at Northampton Crown Court in August. The court heard chilling details of the attack, including how it was planned on Snapchat and how an electric scooter was used to hunt down Fred.
Planned Attack Over Schoolyard Spat Ends in Tragedy
The brutal assault was sparked by a dispute two days earlier involving local schoolboys at fast-food chains McDonald’s and Taco Bell. Fred and friends tried to avoid trouble but the 15-year-old had already been to Fred’s school looking for him.
When Fred and his mate spotted him, they crossed to a nearby island for safety. It was too late. Seconds later, the attacker forced Fred against a tree and stabbed him in the chest. The entire deadly encounter lasted just seven seconds.
Public Heroes Aid Police Arrest
Two quick-thinking members of the public chased the suspect to a nearby house and alerted police. Armed officers found the boy hiding in the attic. At the scene, detectives recovered two knives, one smeared with Fred’s blood, plus discarded clothing and phones.
A 17-year-old, tried alongside the killer, was cleared of murder and manslaughter but got an 18-month youth rehab order after admitting to possessing a knife during the incident.
Heartbroken Father’s Emotional Tribute
“Words cannot describe how I feel and the impact of losing Fred has had on not just me but my family, Fred’s friends, and the whole town,” Fred’s dad, Rohan, told the court in a victim impact statement.
“When Fred was taken so was my heart. I wake up calling for him before reality hits. We had so many plans. He didn’t even get to sit his GCSEs or chase his dreams.”
Police Call for Knife Crime Awareness
Detective Inspector Simon Barnes, who led the investigation, said: “Fred had his whole life ahead of him. The person responsible has been held to account, but the damage done is devastating. Carrying knives has deadly consequences — and it’s time for a societal change.”
DI Barnes praised the public’s bravery: “Thanks to those who helped Fred and those who followed the attacker, allowing a swift arrest. Also, credit to emergency services for their efforts. We all must act now to stop knife crime before another child is lost.”
