Baby Suffocated by Young Mum: Caitlin Jones Jailed for Nearly Six Years
Tragic Death of Baby Francesca Haworth
Caitlin Jones, 21, from Willowbank Avenue, has been locked up for five years and eight months at Preston Crown Court. She was convicted of the manslaughter of her eight-month-old daughter, Francesca Haworth.
On the morning of November 7, 2018, emergency services were called to an address on Frederick Street after reports that baby Francesca was found unresponsive. She was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital but sadly later died. A Home Office post-mortem revealed the cause of death was suffocation.
Damning Digital Evidence Uncovered
Detectives launched a full investigation, seizing Jones’ phone and iPad. Experts discovered she had searched for information about suffocating babies and whether this carried legal consequences. Disturbingly, Jones tried to delete these searches just before calling emergency services at 7:28am.
At hospital, Jones bizarrely asked if she would be held responsible for Francesca’s death. She also gave inconsistent accounts of finding her daughter in the cot wrapped in a blanket.
Arrest, Charge, and Guilty Plea
Jones was arrested and charged with murder in July 2020. However, after reviewing the case, prosecutors accepted a guilty plea for manslaughter. The court sentenced her to five years and eight months behind bars.
Police and Prosecutors Speak Out
“The death of Francesca Haworth was utterly tragic, heartbreaking and wholly avoidable,” said Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Willis of Lancashire Police. “A baby is reliant on her mother’s care and love. Sadly, Caitlin Jones showed little regard for Francesca’s welfare.”
Willis added, “Jones never explained what she did or why. She admitted intent to cause harm, which is inexplicable. Her internet searches, deletion attempts, and inconsistent stories raised serious red flags. Her behaviour at hospital was deeply concerning.”
Senior District Crown Prosecutor Isla Chilton stated, “This was a deliberate and premeditated act. Forensic evidence made it clear — Francesca’s death was no accident. Jones even tried to blame her partner for the damning internet searches.”
“Our thoughts remain with Francesca’s family during this devastating time,” Chilton added.
This tragic case highlights the dark realities behind some heartbreakingly preventable deaths.
