Four Trapped by Tide at Beachy Head Lighthouse Rescued by Eastbourne RNLI
Tense Rescue Near Beachy Head
Four people, including a child, were dramatically saved by Eastbourne RNLI after being cut off by the incoming tide near Beachy Head lighthouse. The group found themselves stranded with no safe route back to shore as the sea rapidly surrounded them.
Solent Coastguard quickly tasked Eastbourne’s D-Class Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) following emergency reports. The lifeboat crew arrived fast and located the trio of adults and a child trapped at the base of the cliffs — a notorious danger zone for walkers who misjudge the tide.
Swift Action Saves the Day
Under close watch from Coastguard Rescue Officers stationed on the clifftop, the RNLI crew safely transferred all four onto the lifeboat. They were then brought to safety at Cow Gap Steps without injury.
RNLI spokesperson: “This is another reminder of how quickly the tide can turn a pleasant walk into a dangerous situation. Thankfully, all casualties were uninjured and brought ashore safely.”
RNLI Urges Caution at the Coast
The RNLI warns beachgoers to always check tide times before heading out. Planning walks around low tide helps avoid fast-rising water, strong currents, and cut-off exit points that turn parts of the coast deadly.
“Use a reliable tide app, check local tide tables, and if you’re unsure—ask a lifeguard or coastguard,” the spokesperson advised.
